Nighttime offers many advantages that allow bats to thrive across various environments. Predators of eastern red bats include foxes, birds of prey, snakes and opossums.
Trees receive less sun, make the bats more vulnerable to predators. Fewer predators hunt for food in the dark, so bats have an easier time navigating their environment and searching for prey.
Bats were captured annually during the breeding season over 22 summers in 1993–2015 (average 6–8 captures/colony/year). Supporting evidence from individual studiesĪ replicated, before-and-after study in 1993–2015 in a rainforest in Eglinton Valley, New Zealand (O'Connell et al 2017) found that ship rat Rattus rattus control resulted in increased survival probabilities of female bats within three long-tailed bat Chalinolobus tuberculatus colonies. Bats are tough to come in contact with for humans and predators alike.
